Hoya Variable Density II is a filter with variable light transmittance, made of high-quality optical glass. Its construction is based on two polarizers, whose combine position changed by rotating ring allows you to smoothly regulate the amount of light passing by through the filter. There are two values on the filter holder, marked as MIN and MAX, which define the filter's operating range.
With the Hoya Variable Density II filter, we can photograph, using even very fast lenses, such as 50mm f/1.4 with the aperture fully open, or correct the shutter speed or extend it by a few seconds working in full sun. Thanks to this, we can for example get the effect of blurring the motion of moving objects, impossible to achieve without a filter. By setting the filter ring to the minimum position, the filter allows 1/3 of the light to pass through, which in practice corresponds to 1.5 stops. By selecting the position of the filter ring in its maximum position, we limit the amount of light to 1/400 of the original value, which in turn corresponds to 9 stops. For the most satisfactory results, it is recommended to use a tripod when shooting with a slow shutter speed.
